SUCCESS IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER; YOU CAN’T SEE WHAT I SEE

I’m seventeen-years-old, visually impaired, and I’m going places! I’m an African American, I been through a lot in my lifetime, but I still have big dreams! You say I can’t do it, well, I heard that many times in my years on this earth. You look at me like I will never amount to anything, well, don’t underestimate me. You just will be proven wrong. Don’t go judging me before you get to know me and know where I come from, what I’ve been through, and what I’m going to make happen in my life. You want to know, I’ll be happy to tell you.
I’ve was born and raised in Kansas City Missouri. On October 19, 1992 I was brought into this world with complete vision. Who knew that one year later all that would change in one instant? I was a year in a half old, and I came down with something called Kawasaki disease which gave me glaucoma. My wourld that was full of light and vision became a world of darkness and horror. I was so young I can’t remember my reaction, but how I was after that I remember like it was yesterday. My mom telling me that I was blind; that I will never see the same again. Made my whole world just drop. I was four-years-old when that news was broken to me. I knew from then on out, I had to do something with my life. I wasn’t going to let this keep me down; I wasn’t going to let this beat me. I wasn’t going to walk around with my head down and act like I can’t make anything with my life.
When I was eleven-years-old I moved to St. Louis Missouri to attend the Missouri school for the blind. That opened another door for me to proticipate in sports and a whole bunch of activities I never thought existed. It is an awesome experience to proticipate in sports I never tried before. When I was six, I played basketball, but my sight got worse so I couldn’t play. So I had to look into other sports to play, but it was hard. When I went to this new school, that all changed. I got to proticipate on the track team, the goalball team, the wrestling team, the forensics team, and the swim team. I am the captain of three of these teams and I love the sports. Track, wrestling, and goalball are my sports that I love to do and I’m the captain of. These three sports I never get tired of; I love to do them. Just because I have a disability doesn’t mean I can’t do these sports either.
I have many gold medals, silver medals, hardly no bronze medals in track. I have a chance to go to Turkey, New Zealand, and London, for the 2012 parolympic games in track also. I hold four records in the North Central Association of Schools for the Blind in the long jump, the triple jump, the sixty meter dash, and three consecodive jump. I am a five time wrestling champion in the same association, and is on a defending team in goalball where I play center.
I am an associate minister at my church and I love to help others when I get the chance. When I graduate I’m going to college and majoring in Physical Education, I want to do coaching, and minor in health. Also I’m going to get a major in Music engineering; and I’m going to become a doctor in Theology. You don’t think that’s possible, but just watch me. Don’t underestimate me; you will be proven wrong.
I have big dreams, and I’m going places. I am visually impaired, but it doesn’t get me down. Success is in the eyes of the beholder; You can’t see what I see. To the person that’s reading this essay, if I can leave you with something. Let me leave you with this. Don’t let your situation or disability be greater then you. Be greater then your situation or disability. You can do anything if you just believe in yourself, and if you put you’re mind into it. You will achieve and go far. Don’t let your own biggest enemy, yourself, get you down and make you feel like you can’t do anything. I am a witness that you can do anything as long as you keep on trying and believing.
